ARTWORKING

Do you want to be a writer?

I often struggle to answer the question “what do you do?”

It’s a simple question but like the innocuous enough seeming “where are you from?” for many people there isn’t a single concise answer.

I have written for a many years, sometimes for publications for money, often not. I used to teach secondary school students how to write. I studied writing in college, and now I find myself writing every day in this blog about working as an artist.

I’m a writer. It’s not my “full time” job but I write. It’s what I do.

My advice for people who want to be a writer is to write every day. For the greatest part of my life, I have not done that. Now that I am, I find the positive effects go far beyond this blog. If you want to write, you will either do it or regret it. So here you go. I give you permission.

If you want to be a writer, be a writer. Start today, continue tomorrow and unless you stop, you are a writer.
