BIO
Born in 1985 in Newburyport, Massachusetts, USA, Lucas McLaughlin is a multidisciplinary artist based in Oxford, England. He has an extensive practice including painting, photography, sculpture, installation, video, and sound. His work focuses on the exploration of landscapes from unconventional perspectives and includes the use of oil paintings and photographs on diverse surfaces. Embracing a boundary-defying approach, he incorporates sculptures and installations that amalgamate traditional elements with modern components such as electronics, 3D printed materials, and found surfaces. McLaughlin engages in a nuanced experimentation with materials, an unexpected use of colour, and the delicate interplay between nature, destruction, and regeneration.
McLaughlin's artistic exploration is characterised by its thematic focus on nature and materials. Noteworthy projects include 10 Trees, a series of painterly digital photographs capturing the essence of trees in the constructed environment, and Generation, an exploration engaging with scientific, philosophical, and religious ideas through analog, cameraless photographs depicting the germination of seeds. McLaughlin is continuing his exploration of photography while creating abstract landscape paintings in oils and mixed media, experimenting with materials to extend the boundaries of his artistic expression.
Lucas McLaughlin's work has featured in various exhibitions and is in private collections around the world. He actively participated in the Photo Oxford festival in 2020 as an artist and co-curator, and has continued his involvement in the Oxford art community, including the 2023 Photo Oxford festival and co-curating several online exhibitions through Magdalen Road Studios where he is a studio artist.
