You can spend a lifetime learning about different pigments and their interactions. Working only in one medium, painting one subject, sticking to what you know best. Eventually you can become a true master of this one domain.

You can become a specialist by finding a place where your areas of expertise overlap in way that makes your skills unique. Perhaps you are not the best watercolourist in the world, or even your town, but you could be the best painter of miniature portraits of dogs in the world.
