ARTWORKING

My (current) favorite energy hack

Often I reach a point in a project where I don’t feel like I have a lot of energy. At this point there are usually many elements to complete and I have to make a decision about what to do next. Every task, it seems, relies upon already having completed another task.

Or maybe one day I don’t really feel like doing whatever it is that I need to do. I know from experience that once I start, I don’t mind continuing. It’s getting that ball rolling in the first place that can be a struggle.

I have found a way to get past this point with ease. I put on the kettle for tea or coffee and tell myself that I only have to work on whatever it is until the kettle whistles and after that I can take a break and enjoy my tea. By the time it’s done. I am usually well on my way and am happy to continue

By the time I have made my tea, I have already reached a point in the project where it feels much easier and I feel as though I have a lot more energy. I don’t even want to take a break at this point, so I sip my tea and crack on.

I started out using this as a way to remember to practice guitar every day, but I have found that it is effective for pretty much anything.
